The Staves: These Days

It's hard to imagine a more enchanting and talented trio than The Staves. I've been a fan of their music for years and when I received word that they would do the series, I bugged out. They were a treat to work with - charming and funny - and they are capable of making music that heals and inspires. A regular heap of rare and impressive talents, The Staves are!
I believe that we've featured three covers on the series, two of which have been Jackson Browne songs. Fun fact: he wrote this song when he was 16! I can say with a sense of certainty and relief that no one will ever want to cover anything I wrote when I was 16.
For this Yellow Couch Session, I used Peluso Microphone Lab's P-12 in not-quite-omni mode. The band's blend of harmonies and dynamics are so incredibly tight that I felt using more than one vocal mic would be excessive. For this song, we used Peluso's P-28 small diaphragm tube condenser on Jessica's acoustic guitar. I did very little with regard to processing this audio because it really didn't need much.

Lake Street Dive: I Don't Care About You
Courtesy of Nonesuch Records
http://www.lakestreetdive.com/
http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com
Lake Street Dive is a band in possession of such a confounding number of strengths that it hardly seems fair. Rachael Price has a signature, once-in-a-generation voice and I'm frankly puzzled by Bridget Kearney's ability to sing and play bass at the same time, skills I would equate with being able to fly a plane while performing brain surgery. Not to be outdone, the two Mikes, "McDuck" Olson and Calabrese (guitar/trumpet and drums, respectively), provide gigantic, airtight harmonies while also displaying downright virtuosic playing. So yeah, I was a nervous wreck the whole time this was going down, but the end result is one of my favorite videos we've ever done.
I wrote to Chris Newett at Peluso to confirm that the P-12 was the right call on Rachael's vocal mic and he assured me that it was. We used the P-28 to capture McDuck's guitar playing and the P-49 on Mike Calabrese's tambourine. I placed the 2247se between them in a figure 8 position to capture their backing vocals and used my brand spanking new P-87 on Bridget's vocals. Finally, I ran the bass directly through a Universal Audio 4-710 preamp. The trailer can be a little boomy, so I used the low frequency roll-off on everything except for the bass d.i.

Michael Franti: Good to be Alive Today
https://www.michaelfranti.com/
http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com/
It’s hard to think of a better way to kick off our week at the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival than to welcome Michael Franti, whose new record "SOULROCKER" comes out today, into our mobile studio. Our friends at WYEP were using the space to interview him and to be honest, I wasn’t sure if this was going to happen or not. Matt and I kind of spazzed out when he agreed to play a song us. He couldn’t have been nicer or more generous with his time. So if you happen to be reading this, thanks a bunch, Michael Franti!
For this video, we got to use our brand new toys that Peluso Microphone Lab sent to us a couple weeks ago. On his vocals, we used the P-87 and on the guitar, we used their P-28. As much as I absolutely love the other combinations of mics that I’ve used, this set up may have just slid into first place.

It was such a treat to welcome back two of our favorites, Lowland Hum, to the series. Lauren and Daniel make glorious music and their new album Glyphonic is just filled with it. Seek them out, follow them all over the internet, stream their songs or better yet, buy them! Also — and can't stress this enough — go to their shows. You'll be so glad that you did
For Lowland Hum's session, we used the following Peluso mics:

Anderson East is an immensely gifted singer, guitar player and songwriter and his band is fantastic. Any time I'm able to record something like this, I go to sleep a happy man. I wish we could have recorded a whole album that day! These songs and many fine others can be found on Anderson's album Delilah (Low Country Sound: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/delilah/id1009091106)
Special thanks go to Forlorn Strangers' Jesse Thompson for assisting with the engineering and even manning the second camera! We were able to use a bunch of the mics from Peluso Microphone Lab's arsenal including the 2247se on Anderson's vocal. It's such a warm and classic sounding mic that it's tough to resist! We also used their P-12 to capture his guitar and P-49 as a drum overhead, which gave me my favorite drum sounds of the series so far. Lastly, we used Peluso's tube-ribbon TR-14 with the horns. I really didn't fuss too much with any of the tracks and let the band and these mics do the heavy lifting.
It was also a treat running the Nord keyboard through the Vox AC15, which we received from our friends at Empire Music (http://empiremusiconline.com)

Jeffrey Martin's songs don't pull any punches. The former high-school English teacher turned songwriter's affection for words and storytelling make the dark themes in his music feel electric and close-by. The Go Rounds: http://thegorounds.com/

Man, bands just don't come any better than Kalamazoo's The Go Rounds. Graham Parsons has one of the most impressive voices I've ever heard - sort of sounds like Roy Orbison on peyote in the desert. Also, the musical interplay between these guys feels like a master's class in arranging. This really is one of the most exciting bands I've heard.
This was our first experiment with Peluso's P-87. We used it on Graham's vocals (until he switches to the bullet mic). We use their tube-ribbon TR-14 on Graham's guitar amp and the P-49 as a drum overhead.

In May of 2015, Forlorn Strangers performed in our living room and we've been in love with this band ever since. Sean Rowe: The Drive
http://www.pelusomicrohponelab.com
http://www.seanrowe.net
Sean Rowe's album "Madman" was my favorite release of 2014. This song is a favorite among many favorites. I went to New York last October and was walking through Central Park around dusk listening to this record. When this song came on, I sat down on a bench and for three minutes, the world was a perfect place. As I sat in my studio, listening to this go down, I felt the same way.
For this session, we used Peluso Microphone Lab's 2247se on his vocals because a classic voice deserves a classic microphone! Sean's guitar sound is a blend of acoustic and amp'd, so we used Peluso's P-84 small valve condenser on his acoustic and their tube-ribbon TR-14 on his Fender Princeton amp. For this song, I hard panned the two to give the track some space.

Hippo Campus: Way It Goes

When you're recording in a trailer in the middle of a festival, there's a lot that can go wrong - maybe a drum check starts in the middle of a take, horns on the highway behind us, sirens, etc. Listening to Hippo Campus perform this beautiful arrangement of "Way It Goes," I was holding my breath hoping that none of those things would happen. We got lucky and the result is one of my all-time favorite Yellow Couch Session!
For Hippo Campus, we used Peluso Microphone Lab's 2247se to capture Jake's vocals their P-28 small diaphragm tube condenser on his acoustic. Nathan is singing into Peluso's P-87 and the Vox AC15 (provided by our buds and sponsors at Empire Music) is mic'd with Peluso's tube-ribbon TR-14. Finally, I used Peluso's P-49 on the Ampeg BA-10 (also from Empire!) for Zach's bass.

Peter Mulvey made the harrowing trip to Pittsburgh from Buffalo in near-blizzard conditions almost the entire way and man, we're glad he did! He is an amazing story-teller in both his songs and in conversation - a gifted troubadour and a new friend.

Milwaukee's Field Report (Partisan Records) stopped by to play a couple songs from their gorgeous new record, "Marigolden", which you can pick up here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/mar...
This was a brand new adventure for us in a lot of ways and they were great sports about all of it. For instance, we had to run the keyboard through my stereo, so the microphone that you see in front of my stereo speaker? That's why it's there. While our set-up wasn't perfect, their performance was.
We used Peluso's P-12 on Chris' vocals and and an 84 on his guitar. Shane is singing into my trusty 2247se and the keys are being picked up by a P-49.

Yellow Couch Sessions @ Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival AHI: Breakin' Ground Album: In Our Time - Release: July 13, 2018 http://smarturl.it/inourtime-all http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com http://www.yellowcouchstudio.com Toronto's AHI performed on the opening night of the 2018 Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival and blew the crowd away with their dynamic set of really impressive songs. I can't wait to hear their debut album, which is set to be released on the super cool Thirty Tigers label. For AHI we used the following Peluso Microphone Lab mics: Vocals: P-87: solid state microphone, http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com/mi... Acoustic: P-28: pencil tube condenser, http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com/mi... Electric (which was played through the Vox AC15 from our buds at Empire Music!): TR-14: tube-ribbon microphone, http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com/mi... Sometimes we do these sessions and all of the interactions are understandably businesslike. Such was not the case with Matthew Ryan and his de facto bandmates TC Davis and Corey Gray of The Sparrows. We all hit it off immediately and the result was a damn fine (and mighty fun) night of recording these fantastic songs. It's no surprise that "Jane, I Still Feel The Same" is a favorite among Ryan's fans. The song is beautiful and haunting — a real treat to record.
We used an interesting array of Peluso mics for these songs. For starters, we used a modified P-49ms that in addition to a standard 49 side-addressed capsule, it features a fixed mid capsule that points toward the top of the mic. Because Matthew plays with his guitar slung low, we blended the side capsule with audio from my 2247se.

Yellow Couch Sessions @ Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival Sidewalk Chalk: Alright http://www.sidewalk-chalk.com http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com http://www.yellowcouchstudio.com We loved having Chicago's Sidewalk Chalk pop by and bust this song out for us! Stolen Jars: Bright Red
https://www.stolenjars.com
The songwriting and arrangements from Stolen Jars both immediately jumped out at me. I also appreciated the fact that their most recent and excellent release, "glint," was released as a visual EP and each song is paired with an equally intriguing video component. Taken all together, it's easy to understand why NPR's Bob Boilen singled them out as a band to watch at last year's CMJ festival.
For this video, we used lots of great Peluso mics, including a new handheld microphone with a large diaphragm condenser capsule called the Peluso Stage One or PS1, which we used to mic Cody's guitar cabinet. Chris Newett from Peluso describes the microphone thusly: "It is a true large diaphragm condenser hand held stage mic. "It is equipped with on board 18dB pad, high-end and low-end roll-off switching. It's phantom powered, solid state, all with balanced transformer output stage."

I love me some sweet and pretty songs, but it's also a treat to hear something that shakes you. Trevor Sensor's music has a raw and urgent efficiency to it. Sean Rowe: I Still Miss Someone
http://www.anti.com/artists/sean-rowe
http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com
https://open.spotify.com/album/6WTwPDnbhRDbkR5VeTEyrf
Sean Rowe first came to the series a few years back while touring on his album "Madman." Since then, this dude has become a hell of a friend to me, Matt and the rest of our crew. I always love working with this guy as an artist and being a part of his team.
The is the second Johnny Cash song (or at least a song made popular by Mr. Cash) Sean has done for the series. I'd be happy recording a box set of Sean recording Johnny Cash songs!
For this session, I, of course, used Peluso Microphone Lab's 2247se. We performed a shoot-out a few months back and that microphone sounds like it was tailor made for his voice. I used their spectacular P-28 small diaphragm tube condenser on the acoustic. Note: of his performances, this is the first time he's played on the couch.

Birds of Chicago: Alright Alright
Man, this was a lot of fun! Birds of Chicago are a fantastic band and I love this performance of their new track "Alright Alright." I really dig it when bands adjust what they do to make it work in the space. Using a piece of paper as a snare drum is a great example of that. I think that from now on, I'm replacing every snare that I record with a single sheet of paper.
For this video, we used a LOT of Peluso Microphone Lab's mics. For Alli's glorious vocals, we used their P-12 and their P-84 small diaphragm condenser at the bell of her clarinet, which was kind of an unorthodox choice, but I really like how it worked out.
For J.T., we used Peluso's P-87 on his vocals and my other P-84 on his acoustic. On lead guitar, we have their small diaphragm tube condenser, the P-28. Good gravy, do I love that mic on acoustics!
On bass, we used Peluso's P-49 large diaphragm tube condenser and on the paper snare/backing vocals, we picked the 2247se, which also serves as an all around room mic. I guess they all do, in a way.

We caught Anqwenique and her talented band immediately after their impressive set at the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. So glad that after giving it their all for an hour, that they were still willing to come in and lay this down. Fruition: I Can't Stop
http://www.fruitionband.com
http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com
Really loved having the Portland, OR band Fruition stop by our trailer during the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival for a Yellow Couch Session. This is a damn fine song and if they happen to passing through your town, I strongly recommend catching them live.
We used every single Peluso microphone at our disposal for this session! We used Peluso Microphone Lab's 2247se on the lead vocals and a P-84 small diaphragm condenser on his acoustic guitar. I used the P-87 on backing male vocals and the other half of the matched stereo pair of 84s on his guitar.
On mandolin, I placed Peluso's P-28 small diaphragm tube condenser near the f-hole and their P-12 large diaphragm tube condenser on her vocals. The P-49 was used on the Ampeg BA-110 bass amp (from our buds and sponsors at Empire Music). It also picked up a fair amount of low end from the floor tom/percussion. To round out the tone on that tom, I used Peluso's tube-ribbon TR-14.

Brooke Annibale: We Were Not Ready

It's no secret that we love Brooke Annibale and this song just gives us one more thing to love about her! I also love Art Garfunkel lurking over her shoulder. I've never thought of him as menacing before, but in this context, he comes off a little creepy!
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's P-12 on Brooke's vocal and their P-28 on her Martin acoustic. This is the first time I've used this combination with her and it's my favorite to date!

The Staves: These Days
http://www.thestaves.com

The Staves appear courtesy of Nonesuch Records

We were really happy to welcome Stutter Steps back to play the title track from their stellar new release, "Floored." I love the interplay between instruments and I'll forever be a sucker for great vocal harmonies.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's P-87 large diaphragm condenser on Ben's vocals and Cindy is singing into their P-12 tube condenser. Phil's melodic guitar part is being captured by Peluso's TR-14 tube-ribbon condenser. I also have the P-49 in place as a drum overhead.

Not everyone in Pittsburgh shares my enthusiasm for snow, but I love the stuff. When Charlottesville, Virginia's Lowland Hum stopped by the morning after their fantastic show, it was coming down pretty good. These songs provided the perfect soundtrack to that morning and I've been listening to their catalog and watching their creative videos obsessively ever since.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's P-12 large diaphragm tube condenser on Lauren's vocals and their tube-ribbon TR-14 to mic the Vox AC-15 (provided to us by our buds at Empire Music) through which we ran her keyboard. We used Peluso's P-87 large diaphragm condenser on Daniel's vocals and their P-28 small diaphragm tube condenser on his guitar.

"This is my song for the resistance." Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo gives fair warning before launching into "Thrown Over the Wall" - a song decrying the modern political landscape. Ranaldo's voice and guitar playing on both tracks demonstrate the intensity and sense of urgency that have always been at the heart of his music. At a time when our culture is not exactly overflowing with demonstrations of courage and clear-eyed honesty, these songs feel especially important and necessary.

Man, oh man, was this a fun one. Amy stopped by with a couple of insanely talented dudes from her band - Winston Roye (bass) and Daniel Littleton (guitar) - to share some songs with us. Just listening to them warm up was something I'll not soon forget.
For this session, we used Peluso Microphone Lab's P-12 on Amy's voice their stunning P-28 tube condenser on her mandolin. We used Peluso's P-84 small diaphragm condenser on Daniel's acoustic guitar and their P-87 on his vocals. I used my trusty Peluso 2247se to capture Winston's vocals. Also, Winston played through our Ampeg BA-110, which was provided to us by our awesome sponsor Empire Music. Since I get this question a lot, I use Universal Audio 4-710 and UAD Apollo preamps and Apollo converters.

Man, oh man, was this a fun one. Amy stopped by with a couple of insanely talented dudes from her band - Winston Roye (bass) and Daniel Littleton (guitar, note: I did not know that this was Daniel Littleton when he was in my studio and only found out afterward, but Daniel and his wife Elizabeth Mitchell were members of the band Ida, which is one of my very favorites) - to share some songs with us. Just listening to them warm up was something I'll not soon forget. I love the spare arrangement of this song and feel lucky to have recorded this version.
For this session, we used Peluso Microphone Lab's P-12 on Amy's voice. We used their P-84 small diaphragm condenser on Daniel's acoustic guitar and their P-87 on his vocals. We welcomed New York's Upstate Rubdown for a really great house show. It was a chilly evening, but they were good sports and played in the front yard next to a fire. This band is so incredibly good and it's obvious that they love what they're doing. Really hope that we get another chance to work together.
OK - lot's going on here! We used the Peluso P-12 on ladies' vocals. I have to say, they really nailed the proximity for getting these vocals to sit just right in the mix. We also used Peluso's P-28 small diaphragm tube condenser on the mandolin and their TR-14 tube ribbon on the saxophone. Finally, I used the P-49 on the bass. We went with dynamic mics on the cajon - one in front, one in the back. Universal Audio 4-710 and Apollo preamps, Apollo converters.

The Handsome Family: Gold
http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com

After recently recording segments for both Fresh Air with Terry Gross and the Marc Maron podcast, I felt a little guilty asking The Handsome Family to make their way through our very typical Pittsburgh basement and then cramming them into our tiny studio, which happened to be pretty muggy during their visit. Fortunately for us, they were willing to give it a shot and I'm glad that they did, because these songs were a treat to record and mix. This is a band with an obvious and deep connection - fantastic writing and musicianship, all of which is clearly on display on their new album, "Unseen." Really glad they overlooked our warts and made this happen and special thanks goes to Missing Piece Group for setting it up.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's 2247se to capture Brett's rich baritone and their P-12 for Rennie's sweet and complementary vocals. We used the excellent P-87 on our Vox AC-15 (from our sponsor Empire Music!) to capture lead guitar and the tube-ribbon TR-14 on Brett's Fender amp. Finally, we used Peluso's incredible P-49 as a single drum overhead. That mic is magical on drums and shines in plenty of other applications. Empire Music's Ampeg BA-12 also makes an appearance here, as Rennie's Ukulele bass is played through it.

Glen Phillips: Nanci
http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com
When I received the email asking if we'd be interested in featuring Toad the Wet Sprocket's Glen Phillips on the series, I may have actually squealed. I saw that band play at a small club in Florida when I was just 19 and have been a fan ever since. I almost never make requests from artists when they record their sessions, but this song has always been one of my favorites and I would have kicked myself if I hadn't tried. Glen was gracious and engaging and thankfully, willing to indulge me. I am so pleased to have been part of this.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's stellar P-87 to capture Glen's always impressive vocals and their P-28 small diaphragm tube condenser on his guitar. I couldn't be more pleased with the results.

Dangermuffin: Sarsaparilla

If one were to peruse my Spotify history, they would quickly discover my obsession with music from the 70's. It's warm, comforting and lush and the musicianship on display is always fantastic. Dangermuffin are a rare modern band capable of transporting me to that space and one need only to click the play button to understand why.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's P-87 on the lead vocals and their P-28 (small diaphragm tube condenser) on his guitar. I want to talk about these two mics for a second. Peluso shipped them to me earlier this summer and I am in love with them. Placed in front of an acoustic guitar and vocalist, they automatically drop both elements into the mix with absolutely no fuss. The same can be said for the combo that we used on lead guitar/backing vocals for which we used the P-87 on guitar and my workhorse 2247se on vocals. Finally, we used the P-49 on the upright bass because that mic is unparalleled when it comes to capturing low-end nuance, and Peluso's P-12 on the bass vocals. Every time I plug in one of these microphones, I'm made grateful for Peluso's longstanding support of this series.

Ruby Amanfu: Taking Memories
http://rubyamanfu.com/
http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com
We were so excited when we got word that Ruby Amanfu was going to be stopping by our pop-up Yellow Couch Studio at the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. She was performing on the last day of the festival, which happened to be the same day as news broke of the tragic shootings in Orlando. We were all feeling a little melancholy and Ruby selected this song as a result. It's a beautifully understated track and I'm so grateful that she shared it with us.
We used Peluso's P-12 to capture Ruby's vocals and placed their tube-ribbon TR-14 on the Vox AC15 (which was lovingly provided by our friends at Empire Music. In my opinion, these mics team up to present a stark, simple and beautiful song in a really fitting, unfussed-with way.

Pittsburgh Opera: Quando me'n vo (from La boheme)
http://www.pittsburghopera.org
Peluso Microphone Lab: http://www.pittsburghopera.org
I'm fairly certain that during the Renaissance, the people of Florence, Italy routinely performed operas in construction trailers. We're honored to keep this rich tradition alive and seriously thrilled that we had the chance to work with Pittsburgh Opera Resident, Claudia Rosenthal and Pittsburgh Opera Associate Coach/Pianist James Lesniak. The whole song is wildly impressive and its ending is truly one of the most amazing things I've heard a person do with their voice.
I used Peluso's P-87 on Claudia's vocals. She sang off axis from about a foot back. I used their tube-ribbon TR-14 on the keyboard's integrated speaker (placed a bit too close to the music stand).

Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon: Pittsburgh Town (composed by Woody Guthrie)

I was a little shocked to learn that Vince Herman was born and grew up in Pittsburgh (Carnegie, if you want to get technical about it). We were thrilled that he carved out some time between visiting his family and performing at the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival to come record this Woody Guthrie classic.

We welcomed three-fifths of Wild Kindness Record’s Stutter Steps into our mobile studio immediately following their truly fantastic set at the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. The songwriting and musical sensibilities this band possesses hit me right in the sweet spot. This was the first opportunity I’ve had to hear this band and I’m really looking forward to hearing more. You can check out their debut album here: http://wildkindness.com/artist/stutte...
For the Stutter Steps, we used Peluso’s crazy nice new P-87 on Ben’s vocals and their small diaphragm tube condenser, the P-28 on the guitar. Cindy is singing into a P-12 and we’ve mic’d the Vox (from our sponsor Empire Music!) using Peluso’s tube-ribbon TR-14.

Sean Rowe: Somebody's Baby

http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com
We have done our best to make Pittsburgh feel like a home away from home for Sean and his family. We love those dudes and it's always incredible to hit record when this guy is up to bat.
I love this take on Jackson Browne's classic. This song will forever conjure in me that feeling of transitioning from kid to surly teenager.
We, of course, used Peluso's 2247se on Sean's voice, because that microphone loves his voice. Also used the P-84 on his acoustic and the TR-14 on his amp. This is a winning combination whenever he comes to town.
All audio for Yellow Couch Sessions is recorded and mixed by Steven Foxbury of Yellow Couch Studio, although Sean added a little of his own reverb to this ditty. Video for this session was shot and edited by Matt Dayak.

Chris Bathgate: North Country Trail
We had so much fun having Chris Bathgate, backed by the wildly talented band The Go Rounds, stop through to play a house show and shoot a couple videos with us. I love being able to spend time with the bands that come through and get to know their stories and music.
Lots of Peluso hardware in use here! For Chris, we have the 2247se used on his vocals and the P-84 on his acoustic. We've also used a P-84 on the violin and a P-49 as an overhead on the drum kit. I've used the P-49 as a single drum overhead a few times now and I absolutely love how it handles that responsibility. Finally, we used the tube-ribbon TR-14 on Graham's vintage Gibson amp. Great song by some great players.

Lots of Peluso hardware in use here! For Chris, we have the 2247se used on his vocals and the P-84 on his acoustic. We've also used a P-84 as an overhead for the secondary floor tom. Speaking of overheads, we used the P-49 in that role over the drum kit. I've used the P-49 as a single drum overhead a few times now and I absolutely love how it handles that responsibility. Finally, we used the tube-ribbon TR-14 on Graham's vintage Gibson amp. This track is an absolute hoot through headphones.

The Yawpers: Burdens
Man, it was a blast having Denver's The Yawpers (Bloodshot Records) in for a Yellow Couch Session. I've always had a thing for trios that are able to rock your face clean off. These dudes fit that description beautifully. Great musicianship, fantastic songs and a voice that seems well-suited to telling you what's what.
This gave us the opportunity to use a bunch of Peluso's mics for this session. We used their 2247se on the lead vocals and paired it with their P-84 on Nathan's guitar. We used the P-12 on backing vocals. We ran the lead guitar through the Vox AC15 (provided by Empire Music - http://empiremusiconline.com/), which was mic'd with Peluso's tube ribbon TR-14 mic. Finally, we used the P-49 as combination drum overhead/drum vocals mic. The end result is a warm and visceral experience.

Campfire Cassettes: Who's Got The Cocaine
Los Angeles's Campfire Cassettes stopped by in the fall to sing a couple of their darkly fun and insanely catchy songs for us. I don't think that I haven't sung one or both of these songs for at least 20-minutes a day since the first time I heard them. Luckily, they're really good songs!
On Jonathan's vocals, we used Peluso Microphone Lab's 2247se. I paired that with their P-84 on his acoustic guitar. We used the P-12 on Angie's voice and I think it's a fantastic pairing. Finally, we set up their P-49 as a drum overhead and vocal mic for the drummer. I love how warm and lively this combo feels.

Anthony D'Amato stopped by to sing a couple songs for us before his fantastic show later that evening with Valerie June. From the moment he sat down and started playing, I was transfixed. Pick up his album on New West Records "The Shipwreck to the Shore" here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-shipwreck-from-the-shore/id901597357
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's 2247se for Anthony's vocals. Clear and warm. We also paired that with their P-84 on the acoustic. I have to say, this is one of my favorite guitar tones I've had the pleasure of recording.

Anderson East: http://andersoneast.com/

Anderson East is an immensely gifted singer, guitar player and songwriter and his band is fantastic. Any time I'm able to record something like this, I go to sleep a happy man. I wish we could have recorded a whole album that day! These songs and many fine others can be found on Anderson's album Delilah (Low Country Sound: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/del...)

Alex Dezen: https://thedamnwells.bandcamp.com/
Alex Dezen, who made a name for himself as the lead singer of The Damnwells, stopped by in October to play a house show at our place and to shoot a couple videos with us. I don't think I fully understood what a gifted and prolific songwriter Alex is until we were lucky enough to spend a few hours listening to remarkable collection of songs. He also happens to be one hell of a showman! He's currently preparing to record a new solo album and I intend to grab my copy the day it comes out.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's 2247se on Alex's vocals. It's such a big, warm mic and I love how it captures the detail and character of his voice. We paired it up with their P-84 on the guitar and it just feels like a perfect match.

When I got the email asking if we would be interested in featuring Freedy Johnston in the series, I bolted upstairs to my wife's studio to show it to her. I've been a fan of Freedy's work for over 20 years and couldn't believe that we'd be able to work with him. Pressing record and hearing that voice come through the headphones was a treat I'll never forget.
We used Peluso's 2247se on Freedy's vocals and their P-84 on his Martin. I love using these mics in tandem.

Kaleigh Baker, with whom I proudly share the distinction of hailing from Orlando, FL, has a voice that grabs you and shakes you with such urgency that you can't help but be transfixed by it. We were lucky enough to have her stop by one hot summer afternoon to sing a couple songs for us off of her new release "Weary Hours", which you can (and should!) download here: http://kaleighbaker.com/merch/.
We used Peluso's P-12 to capture Kaleigh's dynamic vocals and strumming and then mic'd the Vox AC-15 (provided by our sponsors at Empire Music: http://www.empiremusiconline.com) with Peluso's tube ribbon TR-14. The results are honest and stunning.

Zack Smith and Caitlin Doyle comprise the Nashville duo Smooth Hound Smith. Zack possesses a rare ability to divorce his limbs and simultaneously play guitar, drums and harmonica—all really well, by the way. Caitlin is also a fantastic percussionist. At the heart of all of this is a collection of songs that are instantly unforgettable and a blend of vocal harmonies that constantly remind us of why vocal duos endure.
For this session, we used Peluso's 2247se on Caitlin's vocals and their P-12 on Zack's. We experimented a bit with these configurations and found that these really worked best with their voices. We also used Peluso's tube-ribbon TR-14 on Zack's amp because I'll use that mic on an amp every chance I get.

Sean Rowe: The Long Black Veil
http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com
http://www.seanrowe.net
Put simply, Sean Rowe is one of my favorite songwriters ever. His music and that voice are as honest and unfiltered as they come. "The Long Black Veil" may have been written by Lefty Frizzell, but most people, myself included, know Johnny Cash's version. Sean's take on this classic holds its own quite nicely against The Man in Black's and listening to him record it over the headphones is a memory I hope this flaky brain holds onto.
For this session, we used Peluso Microphone Lab's 2247se on his vocal because a classic voice deserves a classic microphone! Sean's guitar sound is a blend of acoustic and amp'd so we used Peluso's P-84 to capture the acoustic and placed their tube-ribbon TR-14 on his Fender Princeton amp.

Man, I'm excited to share this video. Kuf Knotz is such a talented MC and his band is water tight. I would love to record an entire album of them doing this and they're welcome back anytime!
When I told Chris at Peluso that we were planning this, he mentioned that the Vacuum Tube Bottle mic worked really well for hip-hop vocals and shipped it straight away. He wasn't wrong and as our recent videos have shown, I've grown to love that mic for lots of applications. We used Peluso's P-49 on backing vocals and their P-12 to capture the vocals from their keyboard player. We also mic'd the Vox AC-15 (courtesy of Empire Music!) with Peluso's tube-ribbon TR-14. I don't know why I'd ever use any other microphone on an amp.

There is something so magical about listening to a band that is this good at what they do. My video partner Matt Dayak and I could not wipe the grins off our faces after recording this. I love the trust and intuition these guys demonstrate for one another in their playing and the rich history and tradition that comes through in their music. Truly something I'll never forget.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's P-12 on Todd's vocals, a decision with which we were both really pleased! We used their Vacuum Tube Bottle mic in a figure 8 pattern to capture the acoustic and fiddle. Finally, we used their P-49 in a figure 8 pattern to capture the dobro and mandolin. We ran the bass direct.

Man, I love this band. Donora recorded this—actually, I found out that they wanted to record this—six minutes before their set at the Three Rivers Arts Festival was supposed to start. When I walked into the trailer, the talented Matt Dayak, who generally only handles the video end of things, was doing a pretty good job of placing mics to get things ready. With only a couple minor adjustments, we were off. I'm so glad that it happened, because this song pure joy.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's Vacuum Tube Bottle Mic on Jake's acoustic and the other Jake's guitar case and vocals were picked up with their 2247se. Casey's vocals were captured with Peluso's P-12 and for her guitar, we used the P-84. I have to say that even if I'd had more than six minutes to set up and record this session, I probably wouldn't have changed much! Peluso comes through yet again!

I was fortunate enough to catch the kids from Hope Academy doing their full 10-member set at the Three Rivers Arts Festival the evening before we filmed this video. I wish that we could have squished all ten of them into the trailer for this video, but I'm grateful to work with any fraction of this incredibly talented group of kids. In fact, we're planning to spend a day onsite with the band to film and record as much material as we can.
This song was written by the young lady singing lead (all of the students receive ukulele lessons!). In between takes, the 10 year-old drummer was singing songs by Bruno Mars and Simple Minds. Everything about this experience makes me feel hopeful and makes me think that there really couldn't be a better name for this organization. If you are similarly moved and the donating type, please consider hopping over to their site and making a contribution. They sure could use your help: http://cathedralofhope.org/donate/
The two young ladies on the right are singing into Peluso Microphone Lab's P-12, the two on the left are using their 2247 se. Both ukuleles are captured with P-84 small valve condensers. The cajon was captured by all four! Special thanks to Peluso, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and all our sponsors for making this moment possible.

This band embodies everything I love about songwriting and their arrangements are master's classes in supporting the song. Max Somerville writes songs that recall some of the best that ever were—Jackson Browne, Todd Rundgren, and early Elton John—in short, just really fantastic music. You can also tell that these guys really love playing music together and really, why the hell wouldn't they?
I broke out Peluso's 2247se in a figure 8 pattern to capture Max's vocals, as well as some of the room and the gang vocals at the end. Nathan's Telecaster was captured with the TR-14 tube ribbon mic on our Vox AC15 (provided by Empire Music!) and we used the P-49 on the Ampeg BA10 (also from Empire). Finally, we used the P-12 on Max's keyboard amp.

Bridget McCrum is a junior at CAPA, Pittsburgh's school for Creative and Performing Arts and she's also an incredibly promising young songwriter. For evidence of this, one need only watch her video for Bruise Easy. Great hook and that voice is pretty fantastic, no?
Peluso's Vacuum Tube Bottle (http://pelusomicrophonelab.com/microphones/VTB.html) is quickly becoming my go-to mic for smooth female voices. Vocals absolutely shine with this mic and sit perfectly in the mix. I also used the P-84 (http://pelusomicrophonelab.com/microphones/P-84SK.html) on guitar because it's the best damn small valve condenser out there!

I'm so thrilled to have Brooke Annibale as our first featured artist for Yellow Couch Sessions @ Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. I've always loved this song of hers and am so glad to be able to share it with you. Brooke has a new record coming out soon that I've been fortunate enough to hear. Can't wait for the rest of the world to get their chance.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's Vacuum Tube Bottle mic (http://pelusomicrophonelab.com/microphones/VTB.html) for Brooke's vocals and their P-84 (http://pelusomicrophonelab.com/microphones/P-84SK.html) on guitar. I've only been able to try the VTB on a few different voices, but this thing is a superstar! I love its crisp and warm character. This is definitely a mic that eats its vegetables.
I'm also really grateful to Heather Visnesky of Abode, a Pittsburgh home staging company. She has gussied up our shipping container so that it feels warm and inviting, which is a difficult vibe to pull off with a shipping container.

Johanna Samuels: Stop You

Despite a few clunky scheduling errors on my part, we were able to host Johanna Samuels and Dan Knishkowy (otherwise known as Adeline Hotel, whom we've previously featured in the series) for a couple outstanding songs. I'm so glad that it worked out because I have not been able to get this gorgeous song out of my head since hearing it the first time. It's great, right? Don't you love this song?!?!?
For vocals, we used Peluso's P-12 with the windscreen that comes in the box. I know it takes a little away from the beauty of this mic, but it let's me get really close, intimate vocals while keeping plosive blow-outs to a minimum. We also ran Johanna's keyboard through the Vox AC15 (from Empire Music!) and mic'd it using Peluso's tube-ribbon TR-14. Lastly, we used Peluso's small valve P-84 on Dan's acoustic. I know I say this a lot, but I really love Peluso's microphones. This series would not be the same without their many contributions.

San Francisco's Megan Slankard has more going for her than seems reasonably fair. She's whip smart, funny, a really solid guitar player and then she starts singing and blows the (unfinished) roof off the joint. It was a treat having her and Jeff Campbell (featured in an upcoming video) in to sing a couple songs for us. These kids are welcome back any time!
Just about anytime I'm able to combine Peluso's P-12 on a vocal with their P-84 on an acoustic, I feel lucky. It just works so, so very well and Megan proves no exception.

The Family Crest (http://www.thefamilycrestfamily.com/)
This whole thing happened thanks to a chance meeting at CMJ this year. I was in line for free coffee in the artist lounge at the swanky Hotel on Rivington right behind Liam McCormick and we struck up a conversation. He told me about the unique structure of his band and some of the showcases they were playing and I told him about this series. As luck would have it, they were swinging back through Pittsburgh a couple weeks later and this is the result!
Now, The Family Crest is a seven-piece band and Yellow Couch is pretty tiny. So we pulled out most of the furniture to squeeze them in. What's great is that it gave me an opportunity to use almost every Peluso mic that I have! On Liam's voice and guitar, we used the modified P-49 MSC (mid-side-capsule), which contains a standard P-49 capsule as well as a fixed mid capsule, making it ideal for recording guitar and vocals simultaneously. We used the P-12 on Laura's flute and vocals. I split up the matched stereo set of P-84s and used them on the violin and cello. I used Peluso's TR-14 tube-ribbon condenser on the trombone and their 2247se as a drum overhead. Fact is, we ran out of stands so I had to run the bass direct.
It was flat out incredible to to hit record and listen to this happen. Since I'm sequestered in my little recording room while this goes down, I never get to see the bands until I receive the videos. I love how this came together and Matt's approach to trying to capture every amazing thing that was happening.

Spirits and Melchizedek Children
This is everything that I love about doing this video series: A fantastic band with an original, signature sound and then every single one of them is a treat to be around. Such was the case with Atlanta's Spirits and the Melchizedek Children. You can check out more of their music here: http://satmc.bandcamp.com/
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's P-12 on Jason's vocals. These days, it's always the first mic that I grab for vocals. We used their TR-14 tube-ribbon mic on the lead guitar and the 2247se as a drum overhead.

Performed by Matthew Ryan along with TC Davis (Drums) and Corey Gray (Bass & Vocals) of The Sparrows
"Boxers" and "Then She Threw Me Like A Hand Grenade" are both off of Ryan's new release, which is also titled "Boxers". As evidenced by these songs, the record is dynamite and you can pick it up here:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/box...
I also have their P-12 picking up drums and backing vocals.

Sean Rowe: Madman
I've been living with Sean Rowe's (http://www.anti.com/artists/sean-rowe/) incredible new record "Madman" since July and haven't stopped listening to it since. While he was recording these songs, I was sitting in my little control room, grinning like an idiot as this came through the headphones. If you like what you hear, please run over to iTunes and buy this record! https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/mad...
We were able to use three of my very favorite microphones on earth for this session: For his vocals, we used Peluso's 2247se. To get Sean's signature guitar sound, we close mic'd his acoustic with a P-84 and blended it with his amp, which we mic'd with Peluso's tube ribbon mic, the TR-14.
All audio for Yellow Couch Sessions is recorded and mixed by Steven Foxbury. This video was shot and edited by Matt Dayak with Dan Rugh manning the second camera. For more info on any of the fine folks discussed above, please click the links below:

Christopher Denny: God's Height
http://www.partisanrecords.com/
Partisan Records' Christopher Denny is an open book. In his songs and in speaking to him, his goodness and honesty shine right through. Plus, he has this voice! I do love me a good signature voice and Christopher has very few peers.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's P-12 for his vocals and their P-84 on the guitar. In my opinion, this is a tough combination to top. For more information on these mics, please check their site: www.pelusomicrophonelab.com

New West Records' Wild Moccasins is everything you want in a band: young, sexy, talented and original. It was a real treat having them in here and I'm really rooting for them to go all the way.
We were able to use the Peluso Trifecta: I've got their P-12 on lead vocals, P-49 holding down rhythm guitar/backing vocals and their 2247se on the lead guitar. I love the way this turned out!

Juno Award nominees, The Trews popped by while they were in town, sat down and just killed it. It will never not feel amazing to press record and hear a band do something like this.

I love Leif Vollebekk's songwriting and delivery. There's something so delicate and honest in what he's doing and he's a genuinely great guy to boot! This first video from our time together — "From the Fourth" — is from his album "North Americana" and you should click over to iTunes and buy the whole damn thing: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/nor....
I used Peluso's P-49 on Leif's vocal and my trusty Peluso 2247se on his guitar. Between these two mics, every nuance in the room comes through and I'm glad it does.
The video was shot and edited by Life Sherpa, Dan Rugh of Commonwealth Press (www.cwpress.com). All audio handled by me, Steven Foxbury of Yellow Couch Studio (www.yellowcouchstudio.com)

Jon Langford & Skull Orchestra
There's not one thing about this song and this band that I don't love. Jon & the gang make music that makes life better. It's that simple. Listen to this song and feel good. Then click over and buy their fantastic record "Here Be Monsters" here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/id8...
We've got all of our Peluso (www.pelusomicrophonelab.com) goodies making this performance sparkle, including the P-49 on Jon's vocal, the 2247se on Jean's violin and vocals and P-67 on drums and Joe's vocals. I just realized how many J-names there are in this band!
